The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. The company saw North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, as opposed to its “base” markets of Japan and China.

Origins

The early history of Toto that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan’s economic expansion. In the beginning of its existence, the company made goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group however, it’s actually a relatively straightforward rock outfit. The band started out as a quartet and released two albums – 1979’s self-titled debut album and 1980’s Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on place with the directive “give us an album that’s a smash or we’ll sack you” and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto they delivered and they did it with the help of the smash hit single “Africa.”

Toto’s musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for ’80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band’s ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. However, the album also includes some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV The band’s fortunes changed for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band’s third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball’s improved virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich’s work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band’s Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled “A”. The album also contained an previously unreleased track titled “Kari-Anne”.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
